Stopping by House of Blues in LA on May 18th

Two years since last hitting the road, Big Boi has announced a 45-city tour set to kick off in Georgia on April 18th before wrapping in Boston on June 19th, according to Rolling Stone. The tour is in support of the rapper’s experimental sophomore solo album, Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors, released December 11, 2012 via Purple Ribbon Records and Def Jam Recordings.

Killer Mike, who appeared on the Vicious Lies… track “Thom Pettie,” will be providing support for the “Shoes For Running” tour, and according to Big Boi, the two will perform together during the main set each night. The tour will be stopping by LA on May 18th for a show at House of Blues, but seeing as how the two days before that show are not currently booked, I wouldn’t be surprised in another LA date (or two!) get added to the roster.

The National resides firmly atop my mental list of acts I really need to see live, so I’m happy to share the news that the band has announced dates for a Summer 2013 North American/European tour! I’m less happy to say that the announcement does not include any West Coast stops, but more tour dates are planned for 2013, so maybe they’re just saving the best for last, right? Right.

The National has also confirmed that fans can expect a new studio album in May via 4AD. Little is known about this follow-up to the critically acclaimed High Violet (2010) as the band has yet to release a title, cover art, or tracklisting, but you know I’ll be keeping you up to date on the latest news from The National camp as it’s released. In the meantime, those of you on the East Coast or in Europe can pick up your tickets when they go on sale beginning this Friday, March 1st.

I hadn’t gotten around to checking out Phoenix’s new website yet by the time the guys of the LA Music Blogcast warned listeners not to, but silly me, I ignored their advice today when news broke that the band would be touring the U.S. My eyes are still hurting from the frantic, seizure-inducing flicker of the site, and I wasn’t able to find any information that wasn’t already available to me via press release, but hey, at least now I can agree from personal experience that, yes, there is no reason to click here.

Now that my little PSA is out of the way, on to the new tour announcement! Those in SoCal who aren’t going to Coachella may be disappointed to know the band doesn’t have an LA date set, but maybe you have a friend up at UC – Davis you can crash with for the night? Ticket pre-sale begins Thursday at 10am EST and general sale will be on Friday, so check out the full list of dates below, and for more info on the upcoming Phoenix album, Bankrupt!, projected for release via Glassnote Records this spring, keep your eyes right here on LA Music Blog where there is no risk of having an epileptic fit.

After ten years of pretty much nothing to report, it’s now becoming an almost weekly routine for me to say I have more Postal Service news to share (and you will not hear a single complaint from me about that!). This week’s announcement? The duo has released the dates for their 2013 tour, and while Los Angeles didn’t make the cut, SoCal fans have several viable options for catching Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello live.

This April, whether you head north or south, a live Postal Service show is within reach as the group will be headlining both weekends of Coachella as well as playing shows in San Luis Obispo and Davis, CA. Jenny Lewis (formerly of Rilo Kiley) will be providing support, so check out the full list of dates below, and be sure to pick up your tickets to see the duo now because who knows how long we’ll have to wait for the next tour?

Artist shares the news via a handwritten note

As I’ve said before, in addition to writing these here posts on LA Music Blog, I’m also the owner of a small pack of dogs (or a pack of small dogs, however you’d like to look at it), so when I heard that Fiona Apple was canceling a series of her South American tour dates because her beloved pet dog Janet was dying, I felt a little piece of my heart break for her.

Fiona announced the news via a handwritten letter posted to her Facebook account this morning, and you can read the full text below (it’s a little easier on the eyes). I don’t have any “real” children (nor do I plan to), but I’ve always believed that having a pet is the closest a non-parent can come to feeling like a mom or dad. The big difference is that you know you’re likely to outlive your furry adopted “child.” The best you can do is give them a happy life and be there to support them when it ends. My heart goes out to Fiona, and hope Janet finds peace soon.

No word yet of which dates specifically will be affected or if they’ll be rescheduled, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated as more information is revealed.

“It’s 6pm on Friday, and I’m writing to a few thousand friends I have not met yet.
I am writing to ask them to change our plans and meet a little while later.
Here’s the thing.
I have a dog Janet, and she’s been ill for almost two years now, as a tumor has been idling in her chest, growing ever so slowly. She’s almost 14 years old now.I got her when she was 4 months old. I was 21 then ,an adult officially – and she was my child.
She is a pitbull, and was found in Echo Park, with a rope around her neck, and bites all over her ears and face.
She was the one the dogfighters use to puff up the confidence of the contenders.
She’s almost 14 and I’ve never seen her start a fight ,or bite, or even growl, so I can understand why they chose her for that awful role. She’s a pacifist.
Janet has been the most consistent relationship of my adult life, and that is just a fact.
We’ve lived in numerous houses, and jumped a few make shift families, but it’s always really been the two of us.
She slept in bed with me, her head on the pillow, and she accepted my hysterical, tearful face into her chest, with her paws around me, every time I was heartbroken, or spirit-broken, or just lost, and as years went by, she let me take the role of her child, as I fell asleep, with her chin resting above my head.
She was under the piano when I wrote songs, barked any time I tried to record anything, and she was in the studio with me all the time we recorded the last album.
The last time I came back from tour, she was spry as ever, and she’s used to me being gone for a few weeks every 6 or 7 years.
She has Addison’s Disease, which makes it dangerous for her to travel since she needs regular injections of Cortisol, because she reacts to stress and to excitement without the physiological tools which keep most of us from literally panicking to death.
Despite all of this, she’s effortlessly joyful and playful, and only stopped acting like a puppy about 3 years ago.
She’s my best friend and my mother and my daughter, my benefactor, and she’s the one who taught me what love is.
I can’t come to South America. Not now.
When I got back from the last leg of the US tour, there was a big, big difference.
She doesn’t even want to go for walks anymore.
I know that she’s not sad about aging or dying. Animals have a survival instinct, but a sense of mortality and vanity, they do not. That’s why they are so much more present than people.
But I know that she is coming close to point where she will stop being a dog, and instead, be part of everything. She’ll be in the wind, and in the soil, and the snow, and in me, wherever I go.
I just can’t leave her now, please understand.
If I go away again, I’m afraid she’ll die and I won’t have the honor of singing her to sleep, of escorting her out.
Sometimes it takes me 20 minutes to pick which socks to wear to bed.
But this decision is instant.
These are the choices we make, which define us.
I will not be the woman who puts her career ahead of love and friendship.
I am the woman who stays home and bakes Tilapia for my dearest, oldest friend.
And helps her be comfortable, and comforted, and safe, and important.
Many of us these days, we dread the death of a loved one. It is the ugly truth of Life, that keeps us feeling terrified and alone.
I wish we could also appreciate the time that lies right beside the end of time.
I know that I will feel the most overwhelming knowledge of her, and of her life and of my love for her, in the last moments.
I need to do my damnedest to be there for that.
Because it will be the most beautiful, the most intense, the most enriching experience of life I’ve ever known.
When she dies.
So I am staying home, and I am listening to her snore and wheeze, and reveling in the swampiest, most awful breath that ever emanated from an angel.
And I am asking for your blessing.

I’ll be seeing you.

Release video for "Been Away Too Long"

Now that the election is over, we can start counting down the days to the truly important event of Fall 2012: the release of the new Soundgarden album! This Tuesday, the legendary rock band will release King Animal, their first album of new material since 1996′s Down on the Upside, and today they announced a Winter 2013 North American tour in support of the release!

The tour includes two shows each in New York City, Toronto, Chicago, San Francisco, and the band’s hometown of Seattle, finishing off the run of shows with back-to-back dates at the Wiltern in LA on February 15th and 16th (saving the best for last, eh?). Fan club pre-sales begin this Monday, November 12th, and tickets go on-sale to the public starting next Friday, November 16th.

Soundgarden has also announced a commemorative poster art design contest for the tour, so all you creative types get to work using the album title as the theme to create “a ferocious and primal design that embodies the untamed disposition of a ‘King Animal’.” Pretty badass! The deadline for submission is December 21st, so I suggest you get inspired now by watching Soundgarden’s newly released video for “Been Away Too Long,” the first single from King Animal, below.

New album out 02/11 via Transgressive Records

Oxford-based quartet Foals has announced and confirmed the name and release date for their third LP, Holy Fire. The album will be out early next year on February 11th, 2013 through Transgressive Records, but no need to wait until 2013 for new music from Foals because on November 5th they will release “Inhaler,” the first single from Holy Fire.

Frontman Yannis Philippakis has been quoted as saying that the album is going to have “some heavier moments and some dirtier moments. It’s swampy, some of the grooves are quite stinky.” He goes on to reference a song called “My Number” which will be on the upcoming Holy Fire LP, likening it to a “Curtis Mayfield groove” and elaborating on the fact that the band is trying to separate itself from the indie rock disco vibe saying, “”We’ve always been pretty rhythmically preoccupied, but once the four-on-the-floor, hi-hat, indie disco stuff’s dead and buried with a chain of garlic around its neck, that feels like a really fertile place to go to.”

I, for one, am stoked for Holy Fire. The release of Total Life Forever in 2010 made my year musically, easily taking my AOTY award, and after seeing Foals put on such a great show live, it is hard not to expect bigger and better things from this band as they continue to grow and sculpt their sound.

While I’ve had the opportunity to catch Chuck Ragan perform in support of his folksy solo albums, I don’t recall ever seeing him with his band Hot Water Music, though I’ve long been a fan of the Florida-based post-hardcore act. That just might have to change now that the group has announced headlining tour dates in support of their latest release, Exister.

Stopping by The Bootleg Theatre in LA 10/24

Earlier this summer, I shared The Dig’s new (at the time) video for their single, “I Already Forgot Everything You Said.” Set in a run-down building and starring the stunning Micaela Piccolo as the female lead, the video stands at one of my favorites of the summer, and next month the New Yorkers will be embarking on a new tour in support of Midnight Flowers, the album that bore the beautiful track.

New album, Vital, out October 16th

Anberlin is a shining example of democracy in action. The members of the five-piece Florida rock band pride themselves on fostering a spirit of collaboration between all members, and this democratic take on songwriting is just one of the reasons they’ve managed to remain at the top of their genre a decade into their career. The group’s sixth studio album, Vital, out October 16th, features songwriting input from all members, including drummer Nate, who wrote the basis of four songs that appear on the album, and what better way to celebrate the month of its release than by touring with one of the most iconic rock bands around, Smashing Pumpkins?
