While Andy Grammer may have gotten his start singing on the Santa Monica Promenade and at local LA hot spots such as The Viper Room and The Roxy Theatre, this singer-songwriter rose to national fame with his 2010 hit “Keep Your Head Up.” Nearly all my playlists include Grammer’s uplifting, guitar-driven songs, particularly the laid-back track “Fine By Me” (which was all I played during my summer beach week after college graduation) and the break-up anthem “Miss Me.” He is wrapping up his national tour here in Los Angeles at The Fonda Theater on May 17th with special guests Parachute, and we have your chance to see him live for free!

It’s almost that time of year again when you grab a couple of your close friends, hop in the car, and drive a few short hours east to the land of sunshine and music. That’s right, Vegas pool party season is nearly upon us, and several new and exciting day clubs are opening just in time for the summer. One of the ones I’m most excited about checking out is LIGHT.

LIGHT is having its grand opening Memorial Day weekend, and they are kicking the summer off right with a killer lineup including Zedd, Skrillex, Axwell, and Sebastian Ingrosso. With a variety of party spots including Daylight beach club, Eclipse nighttime pool party, and LIGHT nightclub, music will be playing around the clock. Check out the full lineup below!

If you don’t know who Woodkid is yet, just go to YouTube, your local movie theater, or the television set that’s probably right in front of you. His music — a fusion of orchestral compositions, tribal beats, and hip-hop influences — has been featured in multiple commercials in the last couple of years, and things are only looking up for the artist.

The alias of music video director Yoann Lemoine, Woodkid recently released his full-length debut album, The Golden Age, the follow-up to a highly successful EP in 2011, and on May 8th he’ll premiere the music project in LA at The Fonda Theatre!

I interviewed Woodkid back in October when he was set to premiere in LA at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex, but the performance was ultimately delayed after Hurricane Sandy ruined any travel plans. Read the interview to find out what inspires his unique sound, and be happy that Woodkid is finally making an appearance on the West Coast. I can only hope it looks something like this:

After performing with My Morning Jacket for over 15 years, Jim James released his first solo album, Regions of Light and Sound of God, this year to much acclaim, and he is thriving on it! In addition to several festival dates and collaborations with other groups, including late-night giants The Roots, he is also undertaking a full US tour. One of the stops on the tour is at The Fonda Theatre here in LA on May 11th, and you can be there for free!

If you’ve had the opportunity to see My Morning Jacket live, you know that not only is James an incredible musician, but he puts on a hell of a show, with great lighting, solos, and extended jams. Attendees can expect fleeting highs and desperate lows from this solo outing, and you are guaranteed to see fans dancing. There also might be a few interesting smells in the air, you will probably see someone cry at some point, and you will love every minute of it.

Coachella, Coachella, Coachella. If you’re a music lover living in Los Angeles, you’re likely experiencing Coachella overload right about now, which is totally fine…if you’re going to Coachella. If, like me, you’ll be sticking around LA these next two weekend, you might be feeling a bit left out right about now, but keep this in mind: with Coachella now expanded to two identical weekends, all those bands you’re dying to see in Indio are going to have to find something to do from Monday through Thursday, and for many artists, that “something” is playing a show in Los Angeles.

A prime example of this phenomenon is London-based dubstep-rock band Modestep. The group released their debut album, Evolution Theory, on March 5th, and they’ll be playing Coachella on April 12 and 19th. However, on April 18th, Modestep will be hitting the stage at Club Nokia for a show with Mimosa, Dirty Phonics, and DJ Muggs! And guess what? We’re giving TWO lucky readers each a pair of tickets to the show!

Boise-based dream-pop wunderkind Trevor Powers, better known by his stage name Youth Lagoon, has been riding high on a wave of critical acclaim following the recent release of his sophomore album, Wondrous Bughouse. Fellow LAmb writer Jay called the album “a gorgeous, faintly haunting and sparkling slice of Americana, one to be ranked alongside the likes of Mercury Rev’s Deserter’s Songs and The Flaming Lips’ The Soft Bulletin.” I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Although their first effort, Welcome Oblivion, was released only last month, the group has been given a lofty (and much-deserved) third-line placement on this year’s Coachella lineup. Talk about starting with a bang.

Boris Daenen, a.k.a Netsky, bringing his drum and bass beats to The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles on April 5th is not a show to be missed! With a name based on a computer virus, he is sure to wow you with his talented mixing of both live and recorded snippets and blending of uplifting and melancholic melodies with heavy dancefloor bass. In 2010, he earned a nomination for the Radio One “Essential Mix Of The Year,” and the instrumental layers he plays with allow a level of depth that is lacking in many of his contemporaries.

Does anyone remember that silly Girl Scout song about friendship? Well I do.

“Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other gold.”

Now that I got that embarrassing tidbit out of the way, let me explain my logic behind it.

That little tune immediately popped into mind when I found out that Crystal Castles and Doldrums were going on tour together next month.

I have loved Crystal Castles for years now, ever since they first popped onto the scene with their debut self-titled album (I do know they had been lurking around a bit beforehand). I screamed “Alice Practice” right along with Miss Alice Glass. I jammed out to “Courtship Dating” and fangirled when they paired up with Robert Smith from the Cure for “Not in Love.” So last year when the Canadian duo came out with their third album, (III), I was overwhelmed with joy. What can I say? I love their bleak, dark, all-consuming sound.

And Doldrums. The up-and-comer. It may still be the beginning of 2013, but I know Airick Woodhead’s Lesser Evil will be one of the year’s highlights. I love his disorienting synth attack and mesmerizing, androgynous vocals. The Canadian experimental art-pop performer delivers a surreal experience that makes you crave more and more of his utterly creative sound.

I guess the Canadians are taking over. At least they are making up for Justin Bieber, am I right? (Sorry if I’m offending any Bieliebers out there.)

Vans Warped Tour is by far my most attended concert festival. I believe I made it out to seven over the course of nine years, and while I haven’t attended a Warped in some time now, I’ll never forget the energy and excitement of being around so many people who shared a similar vision for what great music could be: a little edgy (more PG-13 than R), a little sexy (all those skinny boys in those tight jeans), and really, really fun. This Thursday, March 28th, the Vans Warped Tour will be holding a kick-off party at Club Nokia for the 2013 incarnation of the festival, and LA Music Blog is giving away two pairs of tickets to the show!

With performances by Chiodos, New Beat Fund, MC Lars, Big Chocolate, Beware of Darkness, and more, this is sure to be a great event that will hold any Warped fan over until the festival’s official LA area dates (June 20th & 21st at the Pomona Fairplex).
