Not every artist would think to slip a Boys II Men breakdown into the middle of a song or voice his frustrations at the limited purchase power of frequent flyer miles on stage, but as I learned Friday night at Hotel Café, Ernie Halter is not every artist. With a hat pulled low over his eyes, Halter performed his bluesy, funk-injected songs for a crowd that he kept laughing during his set almost as much as they were applauding. Almost.
I have to admit that I caught my mind wandering more than once during Kari Kimmel’s set at Hotel Cafe Friday night. Not that the artist wasn’t musically and visually captivating (she looked damn good, in fact, especially considering she recently had a baby), but her songs are so evocative and emotional it’s difficult not to relate them to one’s own life. One minute I would be thinking how much I liked a certain melody or lyric, and the next I would be rehashing a scenario from days long gone in my mind. Perhaps this is why her tracks are so often used within film and television soundtracks; the artist has a natural talent for translating experiences into beautiful music.
Ask a Phish fan or Deadhead their favorite album and the answer will likely be accompanied by a (hazy) recounting of a cherished concert experience. Some artists are just meant to be experienced live, and V.V. Brown is such an artist. While the Brit doesn’t have legions of fan trailing her on tours (yet), she has made quite the impression on the music industry as evidenced by the number of bodies packed into the swank Bardot nightclub Monday night. They were all there to see her, and she was a sight to be seen.
