Coalesce is one of a handful of bands that cultivated my love for heavy music. In the late ’90s, when MTV defined hard rock as one of the infinite number of nu metal bands polluting the airwaves, I sought out a different kind of heavy and discovered Coalesce. When I realized that they would be splitting the bill with Converge on their upcoming US tour, to say I was excited would be a drastic understatement. I had seen the band once, in the late ’90s, somewhere between one of their many makeups and breakups, but to see them again after nearly a decade of longing, made this evening at the El Rey especially bittersweet.
