While most fans’ experiences with Chris Shiflett involve the guitarist rocking out with the Foo Fighters or getting his punk on with bands like No Use For A Name or Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, he’s now revealing a different side through his Chris Shiflett and the Dead Peasants solo effort, exploring his long-time appreciation of Americana and alt country. The band’s self-titled debut was released today, and those of you in LA can catch Shiflett performing at Hotel Café either tomorrow or next Wednesday as he continues his summer tour with the Dead Peasants before heading back into the studio with the Foos this fall.

LA Music Blog recently talked to Chris Shiflett about what fans can expect from the Hotel Café shows, his late introduction to songwriting, and his plans for the rest of 2010.

Audra Mae – The Happiest Lamb
We’ve loved Audra Mae ever since she provided the only estrogen on the Revival Tour and we love her even more after hearing her debut full-length.

In 1939, Judy Garland sang the subtle sounds of Oklahoma longing, while breaking golden ground in her role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. Nearly 70 years later, Audra Mae, a country songstress and grandniece of Garland, is following her own yellow brick road to infinite success in the field of folk and country music.

While December 27th, 1981 meant little more than a day home from school for most children, in Northern California it would be the biggest day of young Joe Sib’s life. On that date Sib’s father would convince his son to spend 15 minutes inside the gates of Winchester Skate Park. The experience lead the future founder of SideOneDummy Records to discover the music that would influence the rest of his life, and the series of events that followed that first trip—the rowdy mosh pits, questionable hairstyles, and backstage encounters with some of the biggest names in punk rock—are the subject of Sib’s broken word show, California Calling: A Story of Growing Up Punk Rock. The show was opened by the new SideOne Dummy artist Audra Mae. If you have not heard this girl yet you are already missing out.

From the moment Sib took the stage, I felt like I’d been invited into his inner circle, the place most of us usually reserve for family members, close friends, and those people who see us naked. - Continue reading this article…

I usually let my great writers handle the writing on the blog while I just sit back and bring in content, but they all felt like I should be a bigger part of the blog especially when it comes to lists like these, so I decided that they were right and began my first blog post on L.A.M.B.

Now after hours upon hours of listening, and then a few more hours of listening again, I finally narrowed my list down to my Top 15 of 2009. I tried my hardest to stay with Top 10 but there were too many albums that stuck out in my mind. Some I knew would be on my list from the first listen and others grew on me. Then there were the few that came out of left field and made me feel like if they didn’t get a spot I would have nightmares for weeks to come about my lack of commitment to good music. So here it is, my top 15 albums of 2009, and here’s to more posts coming from me and the LA Music Blog team in 2010!

#15. MR. GNOME – HEAVE YER SKELETON

At first, you might think you’re listening to a full band, but once you realize this is a duo you will be blown away by the amount of sound that they can produce! I look forward to seeing where this band goes in the future and hearing other music from them. If you haven’t already, check out our interview with Nicole from the band.

There were moments during the Revival Tour that I seriously regretted the two large waters I drank before the show. Eight uber-talented artists playing music for 4 straight hours was not something my full bladder was prepared for, but the show started with everyone performing together so they didn’t need any time between sets to switch out equipment and tune. They would just manage the stage in disorganized shifts, moving in and out of each others’ sets as they pleased. When was I supposed to give up my coveted spot right behind the sound guys to go battle the lines in the well-stocked restroom of El Rey? (They sell Mentos and Twizzlers in the bathroom there, no joke.)
