no joy 2

“No joy” is a military term used by aviators to convey that their intended efforts have been unsuccessful. The opposite could be said about the eponymous female duo from Canada, which has found rampant success within the indie community and continues to garner incredible support from noteworthy musicians.

robert glasper

I first heard of Robert Glasper while reading an interview with ?uestlove in which he describes The Robert Glasper Experiment as “the most dangerous musicians alive.” That was enough for me to check them out, and “Lift Off / Mic Check,” the opening track to the project’s 2012 album, Black Radio, was enough to get me hooked. The song is rhythmic chemistry. Grounded by a head-bobbing groove, it shape shifts into various sections that showcase true jazz chops.

Ciara’s come a long way from singing about her “Goodies.” She just recently released her sixth studio album, Jackie, and it deals with, among other things, her very public breakup with rapper Future and the birth of her first child (the album is aptly named after Ciara’s own mother).

Thirteen years after the release of his debut album, To Let, Xavier Rudd returned in March 2015 with Nanna, his ninth studio album. While the Australian singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist is well known on the festival circuit for his one-man-band performances, which feature him playing everything from the guitar and harmonica to the didgeridoo, he’ll be fronting a full backing band for the first time in his acclaimed career for his current tour in support of the new LP.

The Weepies

As one-half of my own husband-wife business partnership, I have a special affinity for pop-folk band The Weepies. Group members Deb Talan and Steve Tannen began writing music together the night they met back in 2001, and six years later, they decided to tie the knot. Now with five studio albums, a live EP, and three kids under their belts, they’re touring in support of their 2015 LP, Sirens, and will be stopping by their former home of Los Angeles for a show at The Fonda Theatre on June 9th with support from The Silent War.

Twin Shadow, AKA George Lewis Jr., could be described as a Renaissance man of music, not simply because he has produced, written, and recorded many of his own tracks, but because his repertoire of hypnotizing and synth-fueled tunes echoes an endless array of genres and movements.
