While living in LA has its obvious perks (looking at you, sun), something I often miss about the east coast is the accessibility to Broadway. Luckily for us in LA, however, our city does have several incredible theatres that ensure we can still (eventually) get our Great White Way fix.

Get ready for an emotional ride… Dear Evan Hansen will be coming to the Ahmanson Theatre in the fall of 2018!

Nominated for a whopping nine Tony Awards, and winning six of them – including best musical, Dear Evan Hansen dominated this year’s theatre season. And how could it not, with music and lyrics written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the young duo behind La La Land, and the title character originally played by the wondrous Ben Platt.

The story of Evan Hanson is a heart-wrenching one. It tells the tale of a 17-year-old boy with social anxiety disorder who finds himself absorbed in a web of lies after the death of a classmate. The musical tugs at the heart strings of anyone who has ever remotely felt isolated or different (aka most of us) on such a magnified level that it’s impossible to get through even the soundtrack of the show without getting somewhat teary eyed.

The original director, Michael Greif (Rent, Next to Normal) will continue on with the show on its national tour, ensuring an incredible success.

As reported by the LA Times, “The tour, scheduled to arrive at [Center Theatre Group’s) Ahmanson Theatre in fall 2018, will start in Denver and stop in 50 other cities, including Buffalo, N.Y.; Charlotte, N.C., and Chicago.”

There’s no word out on casting and whether any original members will join the national tour, but I’ll be sure to keep you posted as soon as those announcements are released!
