This Thursday, June 7th, the annual Hollywood Fringe Festival will fill theaters throughout Los Angeles with original independent productions ranging from musicals, one woman shows, dark comedies, and plenty of political satires. This year’s festival boasts 375 shows and over 2,000 performances, but we’ve narrowed things down in our top five can’t-miss musicals. Check out our list below so you can celebrate independent, do-it-yourself theater this month, created by some Los Angeles’ most hard-working, creative talent.

5) Divorce: The Hip-Hop Musicaltickets

After sold out performances at The Second City and iO West, Divorce: The Hip-Hop Musical will take the stage at this year’s Fringe to show audiences what happens when a nuclear family goes nuclear. This musical explores the “stress, duress, and mess” of a divorce, using comedy and hip hop to help give audiences a better understanding of a growing trend that ends modern relationships today.

4) Nothing Bad: A Werewolf Rock Musical tickets

This rock musical begins with good girl Lily White being turned into a werewolf by a biker gang in Nothing Bad: A Werewolf Rock Musical. “This is going to be very different; this is an adult rock musical,” writer and director Erik Blair said. “No parody or anything corny. We’re creating a real tale of rage and the choices people make with power…and we think audiences are going to be blown away.”

3) Comic-Con: The Musical – tickets

Join a trio of Comic-Con attendees on the path to “friendship, artistry, and inner acceptance” as they navigate the country’s biggest celebration of fandoms and embrace their inner superpowers. Honoring the deep cosplay roots of Comic-Con, a costume contest will be held at every show, so dress to the nerdcore nines and grab tickets to this show quickly to one of only three performances!

2) Slashed!tickets

Up and coming horror director Chelsea Stardust has already filmed terrifyingly good shorts for Crypt TV and is now taking her talents to the stage in what is now a completely sold out run! This original musical pays homage to the best of horror tropes as counselors at “Camp Doom” are tormented by a former camper’s ghost who died due to their irresponsible partying. Expect plenty of debauchery, gore and camp in this 1980s musical if you can somehow nab tickets at the door before the show!

1) Turbulence!tickets

Our favorite musical improv comedy troupe Robot Teammate and the Accidental Party return for the third year in a row with an original, sci-fi musical that is out of this world – literally. In the 4242 Intergalympics, Earth is battling Mars for interstellar dominance. It’s up to a ragtag crew filled with Robot’s signature zany characters to save the planet in this high-stakes comedy. The group’s previous Fringe musical hits Timeheart and Thug Tunnel boasted sold-out performances, uniquely memorable songs and a hefty serving of heart, so expect Turbulence! to deliver a rousingly good time!
