I remember watching the 2015 Tony Awards, awestruck by 12 year old, Tony nominated starlet Sydney Lucas singing “Ring of Keys.” Well, now we can all be awestruck by this song and young talent! The 5-time Tony award-winning musical, Fun Home, has finally made it to Los Angeles! After two long years waiting for my chance to see it (we may have lucked out with the weather here in LA, but New Yorkers do get Broadway…), I couldn’t be more excited that the show has made its home at the Ahmanson Theatre for the next five weeks.
Adapted into a musical from Alison Bechdel’s autobiographical graphic novel of the same name, the show takes place during three separate time periods of Bechdel’s life. Connecting the stages through memories centered around her domineering father, Bruce, the story explores Bechdel’s coming out journey and the consequent relationship with her dad – a closeted gay man who commits suicide.
Originally labeled as “New! Fresh! Original!” the show is still being praised as such. Having started the tour in October of 2016, Fun Home has been receiving consistently wonderful reviews for its masterful storytelling and poignancy. The show first debuted Off-Broadway at Boston’s The Public Theatre in 2013 before hitting Broadway’s Circle in the Square Theatre in 2015. It was nominated for a whopping twelve Tony Awards, and won five: Best Direction of a Musical, Best Leading Actor in a Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Musical.
Tickets are available through the Centre Theatre Group, and the show will be running through April 1st. Be sure not to miss it! Who knows if it’ll be another two years before we get a second chance to see it.
