Ever since I saw Beta Play open a show at The Troubadour last year, I’ve been eagerly awaiting their next album. Tough to pin down exactly who or what they sound like, my latest conclusion is that the Santa Barbara-based indie-rock group has a The Killers-meets-Fun-meets-The 1975 vibe. It’s captivating — a sonic aesthetic simultaneously familiar and new.

Formerly known as Tommy & The High Pilots, the band itself has actually been around for several years. Having released two EPs and two albums under their first moniker, by late 2014 they decided it was time to re-vamp. Presently known as Beta Play, the band consists of brothers Tommy and Mike Cantillion joined by Mike Dyer.

When performing live, the band is full of energy, commanding the stage like seasoned pros. They pack a punch with their full and perfectly blended sound, utilizing their time on stage to leave a lasting mark on their audience. I remember watching their performance and being in awe of their mastery and utterly shocked that I hadn’t heard of them before.

According to posts on the band’s Facebook page, they are currently working on new music and are planning to hit the road for a tour at some point this year. It won’t be one to miss!

Beta Play’s self-titled debut EP, as well as their follow-up single, “The Way We Play,” can be purchased on ITunes or streamed on Soundcloud.
