Thursday night, The National performed a small collection of songs from their yet-to-be-announced album to a sold-out crowd at The Greek Theatre. The event felt like a typical date night as the venue was filled with couples, but a few surprises were in store for us.

One was when Matt Berninger concernedly saved a beetle he named Charlie from being crushed on stage, then proceeded to dedicate a couple of songs to the little bugger. The biggest surprise of the night, though, was when St. Vincent‘s Annie Clark helped Berninger perform the ballad “Prom Song 13th Century” complete with a slow dance. The memorable night was topped off by an acoustic rendition of “Vanderlyle” with help from the entire crowd at The Greek.
