One of those releases Top Dawg’s Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith promised fans earlier this year dropped on Friday — ScHoolboy Q’s Blank Face LP — and the passion the rapper expresses in this 17-track album may very well make it his best work so far. Bonus for fans: in addition to the album, ScHoolboy has also released an accompanying trio of raw short films.

Blank Face LP takes listeners on a journey spanning drug deals and deep thoughts, touching on real-life experiences and dipping further into the theme of police brutality. The TDE rapper opens his story with “TorcH,” a raw introduction to this unapologetic album. Following is “Lord Have Mercy” where Q talks more about his inspirations and motives towards becoming a rapper.

Big names can be found throughout the album, like on ScHoolboy Q’s latest hit “THat PArt” feat. Kanye West. He also collaborates with legends on “Dope Dealer” feat. E-40 and “Big Body” feat Tha Dogg Pound. Both are ready to be the summer jams and have everyone bouncing at backyard barbecues.

A notable aspect of Blank Face LP is the fresh level of soul Q has developed. His impactful lyrics regarding racial injustice backed by funky beats have revealed an interesting side of the artist that fans have been waiting for.

For those new to ScHoolboy Q, the album may be a bit of a challenge to get through, but it deserves more attention than a quick skim to find bangers. “Neva CHange” feat. SZA and “Black THougHts” are a few of the powerful tracks speaking on Q’s experiences.

This album was obviously a passion project, and Q made it a point to work with new artists on the album as well. He teams up with Vince Staples on “Ride Out,” a track with a haunting beat and gangster lyrics, and he’s joined by Anderson .Paak on “Blank Face,” which features a steady bass and soulful singing.

Regardless of who he linked up with on this project, ScHoolboy Q stands alone as one of the primary influencers in today’s rap scene. Make it a point to catch him on tour if you get a chance — tickets are on sale now.
