UPDATE: Congratulations to our winners Maxwell Hess & Brandon Yarbrough, and a big THANK YOU to everyone who entered!

I first heard of Robert Glasper while reading an interview with ?uestlove in which he describes The Robert Glasper Experiment as “the most dangerous musicians alive.” That was enough for me to check them out, and “Lift Off / Mic Check,” the opening track to the project’s 2012 album, Black Radio, was enough to get me hooked. The song is rhythmic chemistry. Grounded by a head-bobbing groove, it shape shifts into various sections that showcase true jazz chops.

The musicians that play with Robert Glasper are not the usual hired guns you might see in an LA venue on a Wednesday night. These are cats that have the kind of talent that showcases the thousands of hours they have spent behind their instruments. And I’m not just talking about the kind of guys you see at the Playboy Jazz Festival. Robert Glasper and company are the guys who make those musicians put on that stank face, the one you get when you see someone whose playing is so good that it makes your face look like you smelled something nasty.

Those in the audience when Robert Glasper comes to El Rey Theatre on June 17th will know what I mean. Glasper is one of the most respected musicians in the worlds of hip hop, soul, and jazz. This is one of those shows that will leave you in reverence. And you can go for free! We are giving away two pairs of tickets and winning is easy!
