Miley Cyrus and The Flaming Lips have recorded a seven-song album together. It doesn’t have a release date yet, but it supposedly sounds like Pink Floyd meets Portishead. Ummm, this might be awesome.

Who knew these two had an affinity for one another? I sure as heck didn’t. One thing that stuck out to me when reading The Flaming Lips’ lead singer Wayne Coyne’s comments on the subject was the fact that they recorded half of the album out of their Oklahoma studio and the other half in Miley Cyrus’ stripped-down “bedroom studio.”

Miley tracked her own vocals and mixed the majority of them, which has given me a newfound respect for the little wrecking ball. EQ’ing in your bedroom vocals that will be heard by millions of people shows a bit of raw, carefree character. My kind of production! Knowing this little fact is refreshing, especially coming from her!

Cyrus and Coyne have worked together before. The Lips included her in their musical series With a Little Help From My Fwends, for which she and Moby recorded “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” together. It’s, well, different.

Cyrus has also appeared in some of the Flaming Lips’ videos, including a clip called “Blonde Superfreak Steals the Magic Brain.” This short film, according to Coyne, was meant for “a song that has a reference to LSD.” Surprise, surprise. If you watch it, you’ll definitely be on somewhat of an organic LSD trip. Or just have nightmares, like I did.

The psychedelic-pop pair are buddies. It isn’t just music. Did you know they have matching tattoos? Yep, the relationship is deep, which makes me think the album might be as well. We’ll have to wait and see. The combination is interesting, to say the least. And this isn’t their first rodeo…the history is there.
