With the launch of their Acoustic album at the beginning of the year (which landed a spot on our Top 50 Albums of 2014), a new album announcement, national tour announcement, and historical show at Madison Square Garden, 2014 has been a big year for Above & Beyond. But where were they before they were these huge international DJ/producers? Let’s take a look back.

Jono Grant, Tony McGuinness, and Paavo Siljamäki set up the Anjunabeats label in the summer of 1999 with the release of their first single, “Volume One,” under the alias Anjunabeats. Since then, Anjunabeats has gone on to become the record label of such trance legends as Mat Zo, Super 8 & Tab, and Andrew Bayer. In addition to their production work, the trio also established the vocal trance group OceanLab in 2001.

In 2004, Above & Beyond released their first award-winning Essential Mix, which has gone on to be one of the most highly touted trance mixes of the past decade. In 2006 they released their debut album, Tri-State, which DJ Magazine gave a five-star review. So many beloved classics came from that album, and Above & Beyond is still playing updated versions of its tracks at their shows today.

In December of 2007, Above & Beyond unofficially hosted one of their largest shows ever on Barra Beach, Rio de Janeiro, where they reportedly played to an estimated one million people. A few years later in 2011, Above & Beyond’s hugely anticipated second artist album, Group Therapy, was released to widespread critical acclaim. That year they also released their second Essential Mix, which actually won Essential Mix of the Year for that year.

Their forthcoming album, We Are All We Need, is due out on January 19th via Anjunabeats/Ultra Music. The artwork for each song release has included the names of Above & Beyond fans from around the world, and the newest single is no exception.
