I’d like to think Beyonce started the surprise album drop trend with the unannounced release of her albumĀ BEYONCE. Manchester Orchestra followed suit last month. U2 soon after. Then yesterday Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover) released a brand new mixtape, STN MTN, with very little promotion.

A follow-up to last year’s Because The Internet album, STN MTN features eleven raw tracks. Glover has announced that an EP entitled KAUAI will follow soon and includes a remixed version of “3005” named after his hometown Stone Mountain in Georgia.

“It’s a Gangsta Grillz mixtape that goes into an EP. The Gangsta Grillz mixtape is a dream, and the dream ends when I wake up in Kauai. And they go into each other; it’s one complete project. You can download the mixtape and you can go buy the EP. The money from the EP goes to help keeping Kauai clean,” Gambino said. “It’s a cool project.”

STN MTN is available for free download.

We love Childish Gambino here at the LA Music Blog, so here’s hoping he plans a tour to promote the new music since his live shows are must-see.
