Nick and Knight

Anybody else who enjoyed Lisa Frank folders and gel pens in elementary school will know that the teen stars of the ’90s will always occupy a special section of my heart, a fortress of adoration that cannot be breached. The keepers of this fortress include the members of The New Kids On The Block, The Backstreet Boys, N*Sync, and occasionally 98°. Recently, two of those acts’ members, Backstreet boy Nick Carter and new kid Jordan Knight, have been making music together. No, I am not joking. Your 15-year-old fantasy has finally come true.

The pre-teen heartbreakers just released a music video for their debut collaborative single, “One More Time.” The song has that indescribable, lovable aspect that all boy bands deliver, and although the track lacks the usual abundance of harmonies, the music video more than makes up for it. The use of slow-motion and over-the-top happiness brings me right back to the undeniable cheesiness of the ’90s. It reminds me that our generation of boy bands, girl bands, and sitcoms all had one thing in common: innocence.

Nobody glorifies innocence anymore. Bubblegum pop of the late ’90s has such everlasting charm because it encompassed all things pure and wonderful. No twerking, no alcohol, no drugs — all smiles. Even if the lyrics implied sexuality, the videos stayed relatively PG. Basically, our parents still allowed us to watch them because the innuendos went flying over our heads. In this fashion, Nick & Knight come swooping in with a refreshingly lighthearted video for “One More Time.”

The duo’s first album, Nick & Knight, hits stores on September 2nd, and the boys will then hit the road for a larger than life tour starting September 15th with a stop by LA’s House of Blues on November 14th.
