When I spoke with Yellowcard guitarist Ryan Mendez at this summer’s Warped Tour, I could hardly believe my favorite pop-rock band had already finished recording another album. Since their reformation in 2010 Yellowcard has been on fire, putting out solid albums and touring nonstop. I absolutely loved their 2012 release, Southern Air, and the 2013 acoustic re-release of their seminal album Ocean Avenue. Just this week the band announced that their ninth studio album, Lift A Sail (Razor & Tie), will be released on October 7th, and I couldn’t be more excited!

Lift A Sail promises to be a solid rock album, shifting away from the pop-punk sound of Yellowcard’s early days, but it will still be packed with the anthemic tracks Yellowcard is known for. Key’s phenomenal songwriting skills will surely shine throughout, particularly on the band’s heartwarming ballads, and there is even a hint of experimentation as the album will feature one of Yellowcard’s only atmospheric songs, completely devoid of drums and guitar.

The band has debuted the first track off Lift A Sail, “One Bedroom,” a true love song with its poppy vocals and acoustic guitar opening that slowly builds into a burst of rock energy. Check out the lyric video below:

“We really feel like we got where we wanted to be and made a proper rock ‘n roll record,” said vocalist Ryan Key in a statement. “We really changed lanes, I think. It’s still a massive rock record, but there were a lot of choices made while we were writing the songs that were new for us. We continued to challenge ourselves throughout the writing and recording process.”

Lift A Sail is available for pre-order now, and Yellowcard has announced a fall tour promoting the new album, including a November 15th stop by Club Nokia, with support from Memphis May Fire and Emarosa. Tickets are available on their website with meet-and-greet packages up for grabs.
