From the finger snaps of “Mangrove” to the plucking strings of “Twentysomething,” I’m completely in love with Young & Sick’s self-titled debut album. Released in April of this year, the synth-heavy, perfectly produced R&B album is the first full-length musical offering from Dutch-born, LA-based artist Nick Van Hofwegen, and whether you’ve heard his music or not, you’ve likely encountered his visual works.

Foster The People’s Torches cover? Designed by Van Hofwegen. Maroon 5’s Overexposed artwork? Yup, he’s responsible for that, too. Heck, he’s even had his fashion designs featured by Urban Outfitters. In other words, Van Hofwegen is one of those people for whom creativity seems to come naturally, i.e., someone you want to hate, but are too busy loving.

Young & Sick will be performing at the sure-to-be-packed Echo with support from Bent Denim tonight, July 2nd, and if he’s half as good live as he is on record, the show will rank as one of the best of the year. His album is already hovering near the top of my best of the year list, and repeat listens have only strengthened its hold over me.

Van Hofwegen is one of LA’s brightest talents, and I highly suggest you pick up tickets to see Young & Sick playing an intimate hometown venue while you still can.
