So we’re out of the World Cup. So what? You probably already forgot that we were even in the World Cup. Today is July 4th, and no sport is going to spoil the rush of red-hot enthusiasm for our nation’s birthday. Get patriotism flowing from your heart into the world, wherever you might be. Which should be Los Angeles because, well, it’s kinda awesome here.

If you’ve yet to hash out your plans for the weekend, I’ve got a few suggestions that might stoke the flames of freedom burning in your gut.

July 4th Fireworks Spectacular with Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers ft. Edie Brickell @ The Hollywood Bowl

Oh, what’s that? You somehow have nothing to do this evening but want to see fireworks AND be classy? Well then, a night with the LA Philharmonic and the illustrious Steve Martin, Edie Brickell, The Steep Canyon Rangers, and others is in order. Surprisingly, this hasn’t sold out and the tickets are still pretty affordable. But! If you’ve decided that you’d rather be ratchet than ritzy…

Mark Farina @ The Roosevelt Hotel Pool – Tickets available at the door

You know, house music has come a long way. Mark Farina first got attention around the turn of the millennium spinning in Chicago. He mixed hip hop and jazz with that four-to-the-floor, 90-100ish bpm rhythm of just clean club music. It was great then, and it’s great now.

Juicy J @ The Observatory

YEA HOE. Juicy J is…well, this is really all you need to know. His music is a total guilty pleasure. Horrible morals with unassailable flow and production.

Bootie LA America, F*CK Yeah @ The Echoplex

Because there ain’t no party like a Bootie LA party. Seriously, their events are basically fun dance parties with fairly drunk, hip people. There will be a line and you will probably have to park on the street. Still though! A Miley Springstein crossover? How could you not want to bear witness to that?

Appollonia and Droog @ Lot 613

Appollonia is a trio composed of Dyed Soundroom, Shonky, and Dan Ghenacia. Typically they spin the gamut of tech house, deep house, and other assorted clicking, clapping, popping, and snapping sounds set to a 4/4 beat. Droog should be a familiar name to the deep music community as well, especially in LA.

Stones Throw Picnic @ California Plaza

Stones Throw. Peanut Butter Wolf, DâM-FunK, and the Lions will be performing, but there’s more to it than that. There’ll be a break dance contest with real judges and prizes. There will also be a swap meet featuring handpicked vinyl collections. Oh, and did I mention it’s free?

The Fresh and Onlys + Ringo Deathstarr + Tennis System @ The Echoplex

Strummy, summery, shoegazy rock your thing? Then this is your thing. It might be a good idea to bring earplugs. You’ll know it’s a good show if you end up needing them.
