Andrew McMahon

Right at the peak of pop punk came this rush of bands who sounded kind of sad. The genre came to be known as “emo.” As terms tend to do in our culture (socialism, selfie, tweener, Yezus…), “emo” became somewhat misconstrued. What began as a musical genre featuring songs based on emotion (usually sappy feelings toward a girl) spiraled into a widely negative lifestyle concept focused on teenagers wearing black and cutting themselves. While this style did apply to some of the bands in the “scene,” a slew of others featured legitimate songwriters creating good music that spoke for their time.

With distinct and youthful vocals and genuine lyrics, singer/pianist Andrew McMahon developed a powerful cult following through his bands Something Corporate and Jack’s Mannequin. After over ten years of writing and touring with the two acts, the singer went in search of new musical prospects via a new project, Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness.

Leaving behind the music he had spent years cultivating could not be easy, but clearly McMahon recognizes the value of true artistic adventure:

“I suppose my wilderness is mostly an abstract one,” McMahon says. “Since putting Jack’s Mannequin behind me, I have forced myself into strange spaces seeking new stimulus. New lights on the path to the high of a finished song. I’ve met amazing people in the process; people who have propped this mission up, adding a palate of sound and perspective. This new name carries with it the spirit of that collaboration.”

The first single from Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness’ self-titled album was just released, and while McMahon’s voice is as familiar as ever, the song also features a new sense of curiosity and adventure. Check out “Cecilia and the Satellite” below, and look for the album to be released this fall. Tickets for his show at The Fonda on October 15th go on sale Friday.
