Apparently, the citizens of LA are so wonderfully spoiled for great weather that they have come up with a majestically portentous phrase, “June Gloom,” to describe that two or three hours in the morning this month when it’s a bit cloudy. And then it gets sunny again, so there’s basically no excuse to stay at home on any night this weekend. Here are some options for you to consider for your evening’s entertainment.

Low End Theory Festival – Saturday, June 14th, and Sunday, June 15th – The Echo and Echoplex – SOLD OUT

This is, frankly, one of the musical highlights of the year in the LA music calendar: the inaugural weekend festival for one of the city’s brightest musical institutions, the beats scene that usually does its thing on Wednesdays at the Airliner. For this weekend, they have assembled an eye-popping array of talent to entertain the crowd at The Echo and Echoplex. This one sold out quickly, so if you still want to go, best of luck with that.

The 36th Playboy Jazz Festival – Saturday, June 14th, and Sunday, June 15th – Hollywood Bowl – Tickets

The summer season is in full swing at the Hollywood Bowl, and that means that certain annual staples are making their glorious returns. There will be 4th of July fireworks, there will be John Williams, and first up there will be the Playboy Jazz Festival, held for the 36th time at LA’s grandest music venue. George Lopez will be your MC for a full weekend of what can loosely be collected as jazz, but the atmosphere is likely to be closer to block party than smoky bar.

Neon Trees with Smallpools- Saturday, June 14th – The Wiltern – Tickets

The Utah rock band had their biggest hit with “Animal” back in 2010, but the four piece is back this year with a new album in the form of Pop Psychology, and they are one of the few live highlights of the weekend that ISN’T an awesome mini festival. They’ll be living it up down in Koreatown on Saturday evening, and tickets are still available for this one.
