The members of this week’s featured artist, French Style Furs, may be new as a combo, but they are by no means up-and-comers. This supergroup project formed by Nathan Willet and Matt Maust of Cold War Kids and Nathan Warkentin of We Barbarians takes an avant-garde approach to their music, but with the familiar staccato vocals of Willet layered on top.
The LA-based project formed out of a creative urgency felt by the trio, particularly Willet, who was keen to explore the inspiration he felt from reading Thomas Merton’s poetry. French Style Furs’ forthcoming debut LP, Is Exotic Bait, uses the poetry of the mystic and Trappist monk as a way of exploring the worlds of social justice, pacifism, and Eastern religion that Merton wrote so frequently about. Willet has always been a bit of a poet himself, so this seems like a natural and rather interesting exploration.
Is Exotic Bait comes out on Frenchkiss on July 8th, but you can catch French Style Furs all June long at The Satellite for their residency.
