No more than a week ago I thought to myself, “Foxy Shazam must be going into the studio sometime soon.” Apparently they had the thought before I did as the group totally pulled a Beyonce, releasing their latest album, Gonzo, on April 2nd without any notice. Even better news is that this album seems to be their most daring yet.

Foxy Shazam is known for their incredible and bizarre live show, lighting and swallowing cigarettes on stage, hanging from the rafters, and standing on keyboards. That’s all well and good, as long as their music stands up, right? It’s not for everyone, but it’s definitely for me.

Their sound has evolved a lot over the years. The style on their first album was almost an artistic version of screamo that eventually evolved into more theatrical, Queen-inspired rock & roll. Gonzo takes that same inspiration and brings in an aspect of reality that most musicians are afraid to face: Foxy Shazam recorded the entire album live in one room, vocals and all.

Legendary producer Steve Albini captures the band’s true essence and personality perfectly. The album is very raw, real, and personal. And the best part? It is a free download! As the boys in Foxy Shazam have learned over their years of rigorous touring, you make your money on the road, not in the studio. A harsh reality of the modern-day musician.

Foxy Shazam will embark on a tour in support of Gonzo starting in May. No LA dates yet, but I’m sure they’ll find time to swing by to spread their rock gospel even further.
