SoCal’s annual Musink tattoo convention and music festival is taking over the OC Fair & Events Center in Costa Mesa this weekend, and for the fest’s seventh iteration, they’ve brought on legendary drummer and tattoo aficionado Travis Barker to present. Match made in heaven? Definitely. Kinda like tattoos and music…
The 2014 version of Musink will feature headlining performances from punk rock legends The Descendents, rapper Tech N9ne, punk group The Transplant$ (featuring Tim Armstrong from Rancid and Travis Barker of Blink-182), and hardcore pioneers the Gorilla Biscuits, but the music is just one reason to attend. In the hall next door to the stage, hundreds of world-class tattoo artists will be taking up shop, showcasing the finest the art has to offer.
I had a chance to ask Travis a few questions about how he got involved with MusInk and what fans can expect from this year’s fest, so find out what he had to say below, and be sure to pick up your passes for Musink!
How did you get involved with Musink? How involved with the day-to-day planning have you been?
I started working with Musink (Bill Hardie/GoldenVoice) a couple months ago. I’ve known them both for about 20 years, and when I got asked if I would be interested in being involved in some way, it was really a no brainer. Musink encompasses everything I love or would want in a festival. I’ve been helping with selecting what musical acts we would have this year as well as the car show.
How will this year’s Musink fest differ from past years?
This year we brought in hip-hop acts like Tech N9NE, Rittz, and a special performance by The Transplant$, which will be our only show all year. We also added the car show and a better set up for the tattoo contest that happens every year.
Got anything special planned for The Transplant$ performance? Any special guests that will be joining you on stage that you can tell us about?
Yes, we have an amazing set prepared for Transplant$, playing material we have never played before and having Sen Dog (Cypress Hill), Paul Wall, Bun B, and Matt Freeman from Rancid join us on stage for a couple songs.
Whose set are you most excited to watch? Any plans to make an appearance on stage with any of the other bands?
Def excited to see the Descendants, Tech N9NE, Gorilla Bisquits, Rittz, H20, The Vandals…really everybody. Think I might jump on with H20 for a couple songs Sunday.
Do you have a favorite tattoo artist participating in Musink this year or perhaps an up-and-coming artist that you think deserves more recognition?
There are so many great tattoo artists involved in Musink this year. It’s really got the who’s who of the tattoo industry. I really have to thank Franco Vescovi & Chuey Quitanar for initially bringing the idea to me about getting involved with Musink in the first place.
Any plans to get some new ink yourself this weekend? If so, what and by whom?
Might finish a bit of my back if I have time. By who? Not sure. So many great tattoo artists under one roof at the same time. That’s a good problem though, right?
How has the process of writing your memoir compared with writing new music? Is writing a book something you would want to do again in the future?
The process of writing my memoir has been extremely therapeutic, kinda of like putting an album together that describes or tells a story of your entire life, so in a big way it feels like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I think it will lend a helping hand to a lot of different people in a lot of different areas of their lives. This is only book one/part one; there will def be a part two.
