After seeing Los Angeles based DJ duo Classixx’s abbreviated set at SXSW last week, I was inspired to delve deeper into who these talented guys are, and it seems Tyler Blake and Michael David go way back.
The two were childhood friends who went to the same middle school and high school, which is perhaps one of the reasons their music is so in sync. Their infectious beats are sure to get your feet moving, but their music is also artfully constructed in a way expected of guys with solid musical backgrounds. So what are their musical backgrounds? David spent several years in his own band and Tyler attended Berklee School of Music.
Pulling from various elements of punk rock, disco, and French house, Classixx has such a unique style, and their most recent album, Hanging Gardens, is heavily inspired by Los Angeles. “I feel like most people would agree that it sounds like California,” Tyler concurs. “When we’re working on a song and I look out the window, it just seems like the soundtrack of this city. This beach.”
Classixx has now headlined everywhere from Paris Social Club to New York’s Webster Hall and are touring constantly. You can catch them next in the Southern California area at both weekends (April 11-13 and April 18-20) of Coachella 2014. Since seeing them at SXSW, I’ve had Hanging Gardens on repeat, and if you haven’t had a listen yet, I suggest you do so now.
