West Coast vs. East Coast? Los Angeles vs. New York? The battle has raged for years about which city can lay claim to the best hip-hop scene. Show me your California love. We had NWA, Public Enemy, Ice Cube, and Tupac. New York had Slick Rick, Redman, and Onyx.

Universal is re-igniting the fires as they release their “Respect the Classics” collection. This cross-label initiative is a salute to hip-hop’s most iconic genre-defining albums and today’s rising stars. Special edition versions of classic hip-hop vinyls from the Def Jam, Interscope, Priority, and Virgin Records vaults have been reissued. Additionally, on March 18th Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) will also release its Vinyl Collector’s Edition of Kanye West’s 808s and Heartbreak (should we split the difference with Chicago?).

UMe has also partnered with Made Woman Magazine to allow fans the chance to get unfettered access to the special edition vinyl releases. Hip-hop fans can enter for their chance at a “Respect the Classics” Vinyl Prize Pack and $200 cash by submitting a photo, video, or other artistic expression inspired by this select group of classic UMe albums by February 23rd to show their own “Respect for the Classics.” One winner will also be able to select the next RTC release from UMe’s music catalogue, and to boot they’ll even get to help with the concept design for the vinyl.
