Funk-pop maestro Zak Waters released his debut album, Lip Service, in September, and now he’s released a video for the free-wheeling album track “Over You.”
The track is a departure of sorts for Waters. At first, “Over You” is poignant and pensive — a side of himself that Waters typically reserves — but just before you can settle into the delicate nature of the song, a buoyant and syncopated refrain explodes like a firecracker, reminding you of what Waters does best: make people want to dance. He also steps away from his quintessential recipe of 1970s American funk and mixes in a dash of bossa nova flavor on the chorus.
The video, too, dances back and forth in its storytelling. Wafting between past and present, the video’s ingenue is either in the arms of the-one-that-got-away or bidding adieu to those just meant to keep her bed warm at night.
The new single and the rest of Lip Service have not only made LA take notice, but have garnered the interest of Australian pop sensation Betty Who as well. Waters will be joining Betty Who on tour this spring from March 22nd through April 19th. The tour will take them across North America, including a gig right here at the famous Troubadour on April 1st, for which tickets go on sale this Friday at 1pm. For a palpable live show, be sure to check out this explosive track along with the rest of Waters’ repertoire in April at The Troubadour.
