In advance of next week’s release of their fifth studio album, Give The People What They Want, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings have released a video for their new single, “Stranger To My Happiness.” This new year brings a fresh start for Jones and her band; just as they were about to originally release the album last summer, Jones was diagnosed with cancer. All plans took a back seat to her treatment.

Now back with a vengeance, “Stranger To My Happiness” finds the band having a laugh at the scene of a wedding reception long-since departed. The story Jones tells isn’t new, but as she says, “Let me skin this cat another way.” And indeed, she does. With her signature timeless sound and a world-weary voice, Jones has the ability to evoke emotions buried so deep within you, they just may be from a previous life.

Jones puts up no pretense as the video captures her bald but showing no other signs of her cancer treatment. She made a conscious decision the day the video was filmed: “Not wearing a wig and just being bald was an easy decision for me. I’ve always been me, and that’s not going to change now.” Jones is set to give the people exactly that on January 14th when her album releases. She is also slated for a host of TV appearances and a stop at The Wiltern on March 25th.
