Welcome to 2014, kids. It’s going to be a wild one for sure. I know you’re probably still moving a little slowly even two days out from NYE, so I’ll be gentle, I promise. Truth be told, I’ve still got three bottles of champagne in my fridge, so this week, every morning is a mimosa kind of morning. Ease yourself back into party mode with some genuine LA folk rock tunes or some ’50s rock n’ roll kitsch. If you can go a little harder, well, we’ve got your fix here as well.
Chicano Batman @ The Bootleg Theater – Friday, January 3rd – Tickets
This isn’t Christopher Nolan’s Batman, nor is it Tim Burton’s. The dark knight protagonist of this saga is the eerie and soulful rock of East LA’s Chicano Batman. The group melds a number of influences to create a sound that transcends any stereotypes. It’s kind of Latin-folk-rock-meets-psychedelia. Their third album, Magma, was released in September of last year (yikes, 2013 was last year).
Lange @ The Avalon – Saturday, January 4th – Tickets
British DJ Lange will be spinning at The Avalon to help kick off this new year. The trailblazer of UK trance will be joined by vocal accompanist Betsie Larkin. Also on tap for Saturday’s show is one of VIBE Magazine’s picks for the Top 30 DJs to watch in 2014, Kristina Sky. Get a jump on the year’s hottest music.
28th Annual Elvis Birthday Bash @ The Echo – Sunday, January 5th – Tickets
Before Justin…and before that other Justin…and, well, before the King of Pop, the King of Rock reigned supreme. With a few quivering upper lips and some salutatory pelvis thrusts, The Echo and their stacked lineup will be doing their part to honor the late Elvis Presley. Witness the birth of rock n’ roll for the first time, or all over again this Sunday night.
