I feel like I just finished my “best of 2013” lists, and already the new year is bringing with it a rush of announcements about new tours and music that have me excited to start building my “best of 2014” recaps!
Fearless Records, one of the go-to labels in the pop-punk scene, released a trailer for their upcoming music in 2014. While some of their biggest acts, including Mayday Parade, Breathe Carolina, and The Word Alive, will be releasing new music this year, the news that has the internet buzzing is the announcement of the label’s next album in their popular Punk Goes… series: Punk Goes 90’s: Volume 2!
In the twelve years since its launch, the Punk Goes… compilation series has featured popular rock/indie/pop/you name it bands covering songs in completely different genres from their own. It has been a breakout hit for Fearless, selling over 700,000 albums and over four million singles.
Prior versions include five volumes of Punk Goes Pop, two volumes of Punk Goes Acoustic, and Punk Goes Classic Rock. The series has featured such bands as The All-American Rejects, Rise Against, Gym Class Heroes, Plain White T’s, Relient K, Taking Back Sunday, Thrice, A Day To Remember, and more.
Punk Goes 90’s: Volume 1 featured covers of classic ’90s bands Third Eye Blind, Soundgarden, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, Oasis, and more, so it’s anyone’s guess who they will cover this time around, although we already know Get Scared’s cover of Lit’s “My Own Worst Enemy” (set to release January 7th) will be included. My bets for covered bands are Goo Goo Dolls, Green Day, The Cranberries, Bush, and Smashing Pumpkins. The real question is, what nineties bands will let themselves be covered?
