We here at LA Music Blog just recently celebrated the season with our holiday party. No doubt you too have got your own slate of ugly sweater parties to attend in the waning days of December. The holidays aren’t without their difficulties, however; it’s not always easy to generate the kind of good cheer and general merriment everyone expects from you this time of year.
With that said, we’ve specially curated a list of songs for just such an occasion, so start rooting through your closet or hitting up the Salvation Army because these are the Top 5 songs to get you in the mood for your ugly sweater party.
5. “The Way I Am” – Ingrid Michaelson
If you’re feeling chilly (physically or emotionally), Ingrid Michaelson will totally hand you her sweater. This homespun tune, which helped Michaelson carve out a niche in the singer-songwriter genre a few years back, is just the perfect tune to, ironically, curl up to the fire by on these tepid Los Angeles winter nights.
4. “Red Sweater” – The Aquabats
Rekindle those childhood ugly sweater years (mine had a giant race car that lit up — yep) with The Aquabats’ ska-based tale of kindergarten love conquering all…despite that ugly sweater. This peppy ditty gives hope to the hordes of singles looking for love this holiday season. Here’s hoping that cutie in the cat sweater nursing his hot toddy by the digital fireplace can look past the ten giant floating Santa heads stitched across your chest to see the real you.
3. “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” – Vampire Weekend
In much less uncertain terms than The Aquabats, Ezra Koenig wants you to know he finds your ugly sweater insanely hot and is wondering if you’d like to… well, you know how the song goes (and the video’s just below if you need a memory jog). Particularly known for their tribal-inspired beats, Vampire Weekend’s tribute to Congolese music is perhaps their most earnest attempt at African rhythms. This easily danceable sweater song is sure to get you in the mood.
2. “Sweater Weather” – The Neighbourhood
We don’t get much sweater weather here in Los Angeles, and yet The Neighbourhood has certainly captured something quintessentially Californian with the tune “Sweater Weather.” This lyrical traipse through Jesse Rutherford’s stream of consciousness strikes a balance between up-tempo spoken word and a chorus that wafts in like a Pacific Ocean breeze. No doubt this is one track that will be on repeat at this year’s sweater soirees.
1. “Undone (The Sweater Song)” – Weezer
You knew it was coming. Could I really put anything above Weezer’s classically simple yet pervasive attempt at seething melancholia? “Undone” was Rivers Cuomo’s attempt at emo. For better or worse, that seems to have gotten lost in translation, and the song now stands more for hilarious kitsch than anything else. You know that when this one comes on the playlist, you’re going to have to belt the chorus along with the rest of the party-goers, so hopefully we’ve sufficiently exorcised your inner-Grinch by this point.
Now, please do me a favor and pull this string as I walk away…
