SKATERS

After all the fuss and the flurry of year-end lists, wrapping up the top albums, singles, and videos, there was a name that escaped my recaps due to nothing more than lack of familiarity. I caught onto SKATERS just barely too late, but “I Wanna Dance, But I Don’t Know How” has been on repeat on my iPod throughout the holiday season.

The NY-based punks first caught my eye on the El Rey Theatre marquee when they opened for LAmb faves Palma Violets in October. The band spent the last part of 2013 touring and piquing interest for their debut album, which is to be released in February 2014. To keep the anticipation going, they recently released a video for “Deadbolt,” the newest preview of Manhattan.

“I Wanna Dance, But I Don’t Know How” was upbeat and catchy, a tribute to the theme of the song title, while the contrasting and stunning video for “Armed” is sedated and trance-like, dark, gritty, and deep. Those two videos spanned a vast spectrum of human emotions, and “Deadbolt” lands smack-dab in the middle of the spectrum with a fly-on-the-wall view of the band’s tour that makes me think these guys are probably just awesome human beings and a blast on the road as well as on stage.
