2013 IS OVER. Only a few precious hours separate this old and dusty year from the shiny promise of a new one. What better way to cherish the last few hours of 2013 than to make dubious decisions under the influence at a New Year’s bash? Luckily, there are several going down all over town.
IF YOU LOVE EDM
Aww yiss. For those who are ready to fist bump, shuffle, and twerk their way into 2014, this is where you want to be. The event is an arena-style massive, not just a concert or another club night. House music wunderkind Madeon and techno producer Boys Noize will be headlining the event. Also, DJ Snake and GTA will be there to drop bangers for everyone wishing they could be at the (non-existent) Mad Decent NYE show.
This will be sweaty and fun. Just saying. Laidback Luke is a fantastic DJ. When I say that, I don’t just mean he’s a good producer. He is, but his live shows are always, always a lot of fun. He’s a master of reading the crowd and giving the people what they want without shying away from spinning stuff that isn’t just straight house music. Also, Create is an intense venue. It’ll be cozy in there.
You can’t really go wrong here. Fedde LeGrand is something of a house music institution; you know what you’re getting when he goes on stage. What’s special about Avalon is that their production is always high quality. If you’re looking for a high polish sensory explosion in a nightclub setting, this is your jam.
House! And not the rushing, rollercoaster stuff that you’d get at White Wonderland either. Real! John Digweed is a legend when it comes to EDM. He rarely does shows on the West Coast, so this is something pretty special. He’s one of my favorite producers of all time, no qualifiers. Truthfully, though, pinning both Digweed and Claude as genre specific doesn’t really do either one of them justice. I recommend this one for fans of the music.
IF YOU’RE OVER CLUBS
So nightclubs and EDM not your thing? Go check out what Soulection is putting on for NYE in Hollywood. Their event isn’t at a club like everything else, but in a mansion. I mentioned their label a few months ago as one that people should know about, and I stand by that. I have little doubt that this will be the smoothest, dopest, most positive party in a 50-mile radius. Fatlip of the Pharcyde will be there. That should be enough to convince the hip-hop faithful, but if not, go check out Esta and Joe Kay on Soundcloud…and bring your girl. Trust me.
Because you shouldn’t have to spend a bunch of money to have fun on NYE with people. No, you probably won’t recognize the names of the DJs on their flyer, but whatever. The reality is that New Year’s is for getting shitfaced and making fun, terrible decisions. Honestly, this has the potential to be the most entertaining, least pretentious NYE party in the city.
If you do want to spend a lot of money, but without the cramped, hectic atmosphere of a nightclub, then this shindig on the rooftop of the W should be a great place to lighten your load. Admittedly, you do get quite a bit for your cash. There’s an open bar, deep house music, glow favors, and of course, the fact that it’s on the roof of a Hollywood highrise means you get what might be the best view in the city.
