Asking Alexandria has taken the metal world by storm since the release of 2009′s Stand Up and Scream. After appearing on nearly every major festival and tour on both sides of the Atlantic, the outspoken Brits have quickly become one of metal’s must-see artists.
Despite band-drama-fueled substance abuse, fistfights, trashed hotel rooms, and near break-ups, the LA-by-way-of-the-UK foursome is better than ever. The band’s August 6th release via Sumerian Records, From Death to Destiny, which took a turn away from scene metal to straight rock, is one of the genre’s best releases of the year — and arguably best-to-date for AA.
We met up with AA guitarist Cameron Liddell and drummer James Cassells at Aftershock Festival in Sacramento, California to talk about their upcoming run with Korn, their personal style, and why they should never get riders on their days off.
Where were you guys coming from?
James: A signing.
Cameron: Then our hotel. That we almost got kicked out of. Thanks, James.
What happened at the hotel?
James: 100-proof vodka. Bad idea.
Cameron: I thought it was a great idea.
With Asking Alexandria? Shocking…
James: Getting kicked out of places? Not us. [laughs]
So is Aftershock another tour stop for you guys or do you really get excited about these festivals?
Cameron: Naw, we’re really stoked. It’s been like two, three weeks that we’ve had off.
James: We’re always stoked. Especially when Monster is putting it on because Monster’s fucking amazing.
Are you sponsored by Monster by any chance?
James: Yes. [laughs]
Cameron: Little plug right there…
Not Coors? (Judging by the can of Coors in James’ hand).
James: No, we’re not sponsored by Coors actually.
Cameron: I wish we were sponsored by a beer company. That would be fucking sweet.
James: Hey! Beer Companies. Fucking sponsors us.
They’re British so they drink a lot…
Cameron: We’re thirsty as fuck all the time.
You guys have a couple tours coming up. What do you have happening after this shindig?
James: We have a couple festivals in Little Rock and Tuscon.
Cameron: Then we go out with Korn.
How do you feel about going out on tour with Korn?
James: It’s fucking sick.
Have you guys toured with them before?
James: We played a bunch of times with them in Europe. They were doing the festival circuit the same time we were.
So what are three things you can’t leave for tour without (besides vodka)?
Cameron: Well, we manage to get that replenished every single day, which is a beautiful thing.
James: We don’t have to forget it.
When was the last time you guys legally purchased alcohol?
James: Last night.
You guys actually went out and bought it?
James: Well, we don’t get a rider on days off, love. I wish we did.
Cameron: That would be fucking awesome.
James: If I got a rider in everyday life, I would probably be dead now. I bet we all would. “Hey, here’s two bottles of vodka a day.” Great, I’m going to fucking kill myself.
So what do you bring out with you then…?
Cameron: I would have to say probably my boots, ’cause they’re bitchin’ as fuck. We both have really sick boots.
James: Good footwear. Probably a passport in case we go overseas.
Cameron: Naw. That’s not important. Not as important as the boots.
You guys are one of the more stylish bands in the circuit. How do you describe your personal style?
Cameron: Fucking awesome. Sexual.
James: Orgasm, I think is a good term. Girls just see us and fall down. That’s why you’re sweating. You’re like, “Shit, I’m going to interview Asking Alexandria…”
