True story: Not too long ago, procrastination struck and I decided to partake in one of my favorite past times: cruising through Youtube. It always starts innocently. “You know what? I have to check out the latest MGMT music video,” I think to myself. But then the dreaded/beloved suggestions section comes along. It catches my eye. And the downward spiral begins.

All of a sudden I am watching a non-stop flow of ’90s videos including “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It” and “…Baby One More Time.” I think I can stop, but then I see “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” and click.

But you know what? I have no regrets. Because honestly, what is better than a blast from the past?

In honor of my creepy Youtube habits — because they need to be celebrated — I am presenting my Top Five Most Ridiculous ’90s Music Videos. I hope you are jammin’ out to this just as much as I am right now. (Even if you are at work. No judgements.)

5. “Barbie Girl” – Aqua

Dance pop band extraordinaire Aqua released a sacrilege ode to America’s favorite doll in the form of their hit single “Barbie Girl.” The video features Barbie partying with a kind of creepy rendition of Ken. Weirdly enough, the beloved Mattel couple officially broke up in 2004 (really). Coincidence? I think not.

4. “Witch Doctor” – Cartoons

Danish band Cartoons’ cover of the ’50s hit “Witch Doctor” takes the already odd song to the next level with a kitschy “Yellow Submarine”-esque video featuring a group of men with pretty extravagant hair along with their sexy female counterparts. The group follows the witch doctor himself — a man with eccentric makeup — on a trippy adventure.

3. “Blue (Da Ba Dee)” – Eiffel 65

Eiffel 65’s harrowing adventure featured in “Blue (Da Ba Dee)” is beyond wonderful. Poorly executed blue aliens abduct the group’s lead singer. An epic battle ensues. Riveting.

2. “Thong Song” – Sisqo

Even without the music video, Sisqo’s poignant love ballad “Thong Song” clocks in as one of the most bizarre songs of the decade. An ode to skimpy underwear, “Thong Song” shows a group of women prancing around in thongs as Sisqo admires their lovely behinds.

In fact, this theme carries on to the best/craziest video of the ’90s…

1. “Baby Got Back” – Sir Mix-A-Lot

The king of all ridiculous music videos from the ’90s, Sir Mix-A-Lot’s genius “Baby Got Back” features some of the best of the best when it comes to nostalgic crazy. Asses upon asses. Phallic images abound (including a shot of a banana suspended in mid air). There is even a collection of some fine biddies dancing on and around mountains of butts. Pure ’90s perfection.
