Since joining LA Music Blog in March of this year, Marcus Slater has quickly become one of the site’s most recognizable voices. He then went on to become one of its most recognizable faces after joining the hosting team for the LA Music Blogcast.
Marcus is one of the site’s more EDM-focused writers — sharing his reasons to get acquainted with deep house, interviewing DJs Sander Van Doorn and Morten, and reviewing albums by Disclosure and Chrome Sparks — but there’s more to this music-lover than just beats.
Check out Marcus’ Behind the Blog survey below to find out about his first musical loves, favorite artists, and most cherished live music experiences.
Name: Marcus Alexander Slater
Nickname: Alex or “The Duke”
Place of Birth/Hometown: Los Angeles/Pasadena
Dream Interview (living or dead): Music-wise? Probably Robert Moog. The synthesizer is basically his fault.
Dream Musical Collaboration (living or dead): Dave Brubeck and Nujabes
Guilty Pleasure Song: Crush – “Jellyhead.” Easily the most emasculating song in existence. It’s the definition of ’90s-era bubblegum pop.
Go-To Karaoke Song: “Careless Whisper.” I can’t sing it, but that hasn’t stopped me yet. RUNNER UP: Hilary Duff – “Come Clean” (in falsetto). Don’t judge me; you don’t know my life.
Recommended if You Like: Lightshows, low frequencies, thumping basslines, trancey synths, epic drops, seductively slow beats, dark rooms, loud sounds, bacon-wrapped hot dogs, 3am tacos…
First Concert Attended: My friend’s brother’s band played at the No Future Café back in 2000, I think. My first real concert was probably Muse back in 2007.
First Music Festival Attended: Electric Daisy Carnival 2008. That was the start of an addiction.
First Favorite Band: THIRD EYE BLIND. I still love them oh so much.
First Album Purchased: Third Eye Blind’s Blue and Daft Punk’s Discovery
First/Oldest Music Memory: The first song I ever remember liking enough to remember was “If I Ruled the World” with Nas and Lauryn Hill. To this day, Nas is still my all-time favorite rapper.
First Musical Crush: Sade. Have you SEEN her?! It’s 2013, and she’s still bangin’.
Favorite Genre(s) of Music: Trip-Hop is my favorite genre of music. It’s a kind of a dead genre, but I still love it.
Favorite Concert Experience: Daft Punk Alive 2007. Easily my most memorable concert experience ever. The vibe, the lights, the sounds…just everything was incredible. I’ll never forget that. Chemical Brothers at the Hollywood Bowl is second.
Favorite Music Festival Experience: Probably Coachella 2009. It was a mix of things. Lots of, uh, interesting experiences with great weather and a fantastic lineup. That was the first time I did car camping, too, which probably has something to do with it. Obviously.
Favorite Local Record Store: Yeah, I’m going to cop out and say Ameoba. Parking is terrible, but the deals on CDs are unmatchable.
Favorite Local Music Venue – Indoor: The Wiltern
Favorite Local Music Venue – Outdoor: Hollywood Bowl
Favorite Album of the…
- 1960s: Miles Davis – Kind of Blue
- 1970s: ???
- 1980s: Michael Jackson – Bad
- 1990s: A Perfect Circle – Mer De Noms
- 2000s: Zero 7 – Simple Things/Deftones – White Pony/Happy2bHardcore – Vol. 6 (This is impossible, I can’t help myself)
Favorite Song Lyric: “We got stickup kids, corrupt cops, and crack rocks and stray shots all on the block that stays hot.” – Inspectah Deck “C.R.E.A.M.”
Favorite Music-Related Book: Killing Yourself to Live by Chuck Klosterman. It’s mostly about death, but there some music stuff in there, too.
Favorite Musical: The Lion King. Side note: I hate musicals.
Favorite Music-Related Movie: Groove
Favorite Music-Related TV Show: Electric Circus! Well, it used to be anyway.
Favorite Music Website (besides LAmb, of course!): Blah Blah Blah Science
Favorite Source of New Music: SoundCloud
Favorite Musician/Band to Follow on Twitter: Probably Kaskade. Admittedly, I don’t follow that many people on Twitter given how much I use the service.
Favorite Band: Interpol. Probably. Them or A Perfect Circle. I like them both so much.
Favorite Album: Portishead – Dummy
Favorite Song: Foo Fighters – “Everlong” (acoustic)
Favorite Guitarist: Tom Morello?
Favorite Vocalist: Sade. Runner up: Astrud Gilberto.
Favorite Drummer: Chad Sexton. Even if you don’t care for 311, their percussion was always freaking amazing.
Favorite DJ: Sasha. I’ve listened to Xpander more times than I could possibly hope to count. Northern Exposure 1 & 2 are amazing, Airdrawndagger is one of my favorite house albums of all time, Involver was fantastic, his live shows are great… He’s just my favorite. I love Daft Punk and Kaskade A LOT, but Sasha has a special place in my heart.
Favorite Musical Duo: Maria Taylor and Orenda Fink. Their music is beautiful. Sad and often cold, but beautiful none the less. I will never forgive myself for missing them the last time they were in Los Angeles.
Favorite Musical Trio: Lovage. If you haven’t heard these guys… Man. Advice? Grab a silk robe, some brandy, a snifter, condoms, your lady and/or man, rose petals, candles, and more condoms. Dan the Automator, Mike Patton, and Jennifer Charles. It’s sleazy, innuendo-filled, tongue-in-cheek fun. One of my favorite albums ever.
If you could listen to one song on repeat forever, what would it be? Orbital – “Halcyon & On & On.” Nine minutes of sonic bliss.
