Hip-hop heads! We’ve got a good one for you this time. The Souls of Mischief are coming to El Rey Theatre on August 16th, and LA Music Blog is giving away TWO pairs of tickets to the show.
If that name isn’t immediately recognizable, their hit song “’93 ’til Infinity” should be.
If you’re talking about West Coast rap, these guys are an institution. Honestly, this is a show that even my jaded ass would be into. It’s so easy to be jaded by what passes for “good rap” on the airwaves that you can easily forget about the medium’s capacity for poetry. All I’m saying is that there’s a real difference between this and…Versace Versace Versace Versace Versace Versace.
Rappers A-1 and The Black Opera are opening for the Oakland supergroup. Give them a quick listen if you have a chance. The Black Opera is about as dramatic and as high-minded as you might expect, and all you need to know about A-1 is that he made a remix of the theme song from the Nickelodeon show All That. It is the most endearing love song to the ’90s a millennial could ever hope to hear. I nostaliga’d so hard it hurt.
