We are well into the summertime, and while the warm days and cool nights are definitely a plus, we here in Los Angeles are pretty used to the weather, so why not celebrate another great part of summer — the music! Whether it’s the new albums or touring music festivals, summer days are ten times better when you have a killer soundtrack. Read on to see what the songs of the summer of 2013 are…so far.
5. Selena Gomez – “Come and Get It”
First up, my guilty pleasure song. I initially rolled my eyes at what I believed was the next cookie-cutter song to come from this Disney star, but after hearing it every time I turned on the radio, it has really grown on me. Is it the infectious hook in the chorus? The Indian music influence? Or is it that the squeaky clean pop star is tastefully showing her sexier, more adult side (sans Justin Beiber, finally)? Whatever the reason, this song is definitely firmly in my head and on my summer playlist.
4. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis – “Can’t Hold Us”
Macklemore has been burning up the charts since releasing his ode to Goodwill, “Thift Shop,” and his powerfully emotional follow up, “Same Love” supporting same sex marriage. “Can’t Hold Us,” however, is a song that will be blasted at every house party this summer. Partygoers will toast with their Solo cups as they sing, “This is the moment…the ceiling can’t hold us!” and clap and stomp along with this Gospel-infused track. Great song to make any moment just a little more epic.
3. Mariah Carey ft Miguel – “#Beautiful”
Overlooking the unnecessary hash tag in the title, this stripped-down R&B song is definitely the perfect laid-back summer song. From the breezy opening lines, “Hop on the back of my bike / Let the good wind blow through your hair,” to the simple, meandering guitar line, “#Beautiful” proves a simple song can be just as powerful and addicting as an over-the-top, layered track. The only tricky part is singing along with this one — Carey and Miguel have some serious pipes!
2. Robin Thicke ft Pharrell and T.I. – “Blurred Lines”
Equal parts catchy and sexy, “Blurred Lines” grabbed my attention the first time I heard it. Its upbeat tempo and disco-tinged beats separate it from the pack of summer songs, and there’s no denying Thicke’s incredible vocal talent. The lyrics err on the side of silly (“You wanna hug me / What rhymes with hug me?”), but that’s easily overlooked for what is one of the catchiest choruses of any song this summer, except for…
1. Daft Punk ft Pharrell – “Get Lucky”
This funk song has dominated airwaves, and although it may be overplayed by the end of summer, the track is a must-play at any hang out in the next few months and solidifies Pharrell as the undeniable mastermind behind this summer’s top songs. The old-school vibes feel current with Pharrell’s silky smooth vocals and Daft Punk’s electronic beats. As one of my good friends said, “I want to have a party just to play this song.” Here, here.
