We may have just officially entered the Year of the Snake in the Chinese calendar, but I’m considering 2013 the Year of the Mosquito. Yeah Yeah Yeahs recently announced an April 16th release for their follow-up to 2009’s It’s Blitz!, and just today, it was revealed that the trio would be playing NPR Music’s SXSW Showcase at Stubbs on March 13th. Not heading to Austin? No worries as the showcase will be available worldwide through live broadcasts on NPR member stations and through a video stream at NPR Music’s website.

In addition to the SXSW news, a new teaser that features a 49-second sneak peak of one of the songs on Mosquito was released today. In speaking on the album, frontwoman Karen O. has said, “We took a more playful, LO-FI approach to songwriting…Much of the music was demo-ed in our little basement studio in Manhattan with drum machines, a shitty sample keyboard and tons of delay – which we called the soup….I think this record has more moodier and tripped-out songs than you’ve ever heard from us,” she continues. “You might catch some roots reggae and minimalist psychedelia influences in there.”

Check out the new teaser for yourself below and let me know what you think in the comments. Not a whole lot to go on, but does it have you excited for the Year of the Mosquito?
