Man, that first month of 2013 flew by! I feel like I just unwrapped my Christmas presents yesterday, and now I’m sitting here preparing the first Weekend Jumpstart of February. The music industry has come out the gate swinging this year (check out tonight’s LA Music Blogcast on TradioV for a looooong list of album and tour announcements), and this weekend is no exception. Sunday’s pickin’s are a bit slim though (apparently bands have wisely opted out of competing with the ultimate competition, the Super Bowl), so I’ve included a bonus Saturday event below that should get fans of big hair and bold fashion choices pretty stoked.
Tegan and Sara @ Club Nokia – Friday, February 1st – SOLD OUT
The electro-pop twins from north of the border released their highly anticipated album Heartthrob on Tuesday, and tomorrow night they’ll be treating SoCal fans to live renditions of songs from that effort and its six predecessors. If you’re looking to kick off your weekend with lots of dancing, singing along, and good vibes, this is the show for you, so keep an eye on Stubhub for your chance to snag tickets to this sold-out event.
Handshakes @ The Satellite – Saturday, February 2nd – Tickets
We’re big fans of LA locals Handshakes here at the LAmb (they were our Featured Artists earlier this month), and last week, the group’s bassist Patrick Doyle joined Ben and David on the Blogcast to talk about the band’s upcoming show at The Satellite this Saturday. Handshakes will be joined by Max and The Moon, Fire In The Hamptons, Bedcake, and Wages, so if you’re wondering which acts in the local scene deserve your attention, head out to the Satellite Saturday night and find out.
80’s Prom Party @ The Fonda Theatre – Sunday, February 2nd – Tickets
If like me, you were more focused on losing your training wheels than your virginity in the ’80s, but have never outgrown your affinity for John Hughes films, now’s your chance to experience a truly ’80s prom courtesy of the Fonda Theatre. Presented by Drink Eat Play, this ’80s Prom Party will feature two cover bands playing the best the decade had to offer, including Bon Jovi, Prince, Madonna, and Journey, and the price of admission includes prom pictures of you and your sweetie, ensuring that this will be a night you’ll never forget (even if you hit the spiked punch pretty hard). Plus 100% of the proceeds from the event will support local animal rescues, and if that’s not a reason to put on your best taffeta gown, I don’t know what is.
