For only being the second full week of the new year, we have quite a few stand-out releases that are sure to get frequent play time during the rest of 2013 and into the next new year. These releases include the return of artists whom we’ve been anticipating for some time, so check them out below, and let me know in the comments what you’ll be listening to today.
Yo La Tengo – Fade
Hoboken-based rockers Yo La Tengo turn in their 13th studio album and first since 2009’s Popular Songs. For this album, they’ve decided to opt for producer John McEntire over Roger Moutenot, who’s produced every album of theirs since 1993’s Painful (celebrating its 20th anniversary this year). That shouldn’t sway fans’ minds, however, as the band looks to bring back elements that made the Moutenot-produced I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One and And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out so defining. Expect a review from me later today.
A$AP Rocky – LONG.LIVE.A$AP
This is the long-awaited debut studio album from A$AP Rocky, whose Live. Love. A$AP mixtape was one of many critically acclaimed in 2011 hip hop. The record’s release has been pushed back on multiple occasions due to sampling copyright issues, but the wait has indeed paid off, and A$AP Rocky hasn’t skimped on any of the details. Based on the strength of its singles, “Goldie” and “Fuckin’ Problems,” I intend to give this record a few spins.
Pantha du Prince and The Bell Laboratory – Elements of Light
Hendrik Weber, aka Pantha du Prince, is mostly known for his electronic arrangements. Nothing has changed in this regard, but his collaboration with The Bell Laboratory to produce Elements of Light has allowed his penchant for orchestrations to blossom with lively instrumentation. Chiming, shimmering bells join electronic beats in a way similar to Mike Oldfield, ensuring a rousing listening experience to jumpstart your 2013.
Other great releases to look out for this week:
Pack of Lies – Out of Ink
Free Energy – Love Sign
Sean Lennon – Alter Egos
Holopaw – Academy Songs, Volume I
Christopher Owens – Lysandre
