Pop Danthology

As 2012 prepares to wrap up, people begin to look back. Blogs and magazines everywhere publish their year-end/best-of lists. We even got in on the action with our very own LA Music Blog’s Top 50 Albums of 2012 countdown. When I saw the votes tallied, I remarked to my editor in jest, “We’re a bunch of hipsters.” Truth be told, I haven’t even heard of the majority of bands in our Top 50, but it doesn’t surprise me. I am the anomaly around here at LA Music Blog — the pop writer — and as such, I feel it is my responsibility to restore a little balance to the site. Without further adieu, I present to you Pop Danthology 2012 – Mashup of 50+ Pop Songs.

As I skeptically hit the video’s play button for the first time this morning, my apprehension quickly turned to pure pop-ecstacy. I don’t love every song in the medley, but as the pop anthems began to pour into my ear-holes, I realized that 2012 has been an amazing year for me and that this was the soundtrack to that year. Anyone with a car radio will have to concede even the smallest nostalgia for this year, this 2k12, the year of the Mayan apocalypse.

Times are tough, our economy is a mess, and the election was a shit-slinging drama-fest that divided our nation, but the beats pounding through our stereos bolstered our optimism. Pop music is an antidote to the modern grind. It unites us, instils us with joy to the rhythm of 128 beats per minute, and gives us something to talk about. So put aside your Justin Beiber prejudice for 8 minutes, and remember the good times of 2012.
