For all we know, the indie film favorite Beasts of the Southern Wild may also be the Oscar favorite come February 2013, but director Benh Zeitlin’s first feature film has been winning just as many rave reviews for its collaborative and original film soundtrack — a rare mixture of instrumentals that can relay the film’s impeccable narrative without visuals and most certainly (and eloquently) transcribe the emotions portrayed on screen.

The soundtrack — as with most other film soundtracks — has found its way to our ears through a digital and CD release, but thanks to the newly formed Thirty3 and a 3rd record label, whose focus is on both preserving the purity of film and the warmth and packaging of vinyl recordings, Dan Romer and Benh Zeitlin’s score and the soundtrack of Beasts of the Southern Wild is available on vinyl for the first time.

The vinyl release coincides with the film’s recent release on DVD and Blu-ray via Fox Searchlight Pictures. According to the press release, the album is the first endeavor of Thirty3 and a 3rd — comprised of music industry veterans Holly Adams, Mary Ramos, and Julie Yannatta — which plans to focus on releasing music from film.

“We knew we wanted to do some sort of collaborative work together,” says Adams of her longtime friendships with Ramos and Yannatta. “When the opportunity to work with Beasts of the Southern Wild was presented to us, we all knew it was the perfect album to stand as a calling card for our newfound label. We’re so excited and thrilled to play a part in getting the music for such a remarkable film out to people on vinyl.”

If you have yet to listen to this soundtrack, I can heartily say that it’s one of the year’s best, and hearing it on vinyl would probably emphasize its nature. I stand by director Zeitlin’s description of the soundtrack as β€œan anthem to express the ferocious, resilient, triumphant mentality necessary to hold out at the end of the world.”
