Solomon-Grey-Firechild

You won’t have heard Solomon Grey yet, but it might not be too long until you do. The band has released their debut track “Firechild” as a free download and a taster for an already completed debut album (which has been three years in the making). They also have a seriously bad-ass video to go with it, one that is all the more remarkable for the fact it was made without a label backing of any real budget.

Instead, the band used a do-it-yourself ethic, enlisting a couple of dozen professionals who worked without pay on the video, and they have produced something that is the equal of anything a major label could produce. The video is a perfect accompaniment to the irresistible pop groove of the song, which was produced by a British pair (Tom Kingston and Joe Wilson) who are clearly fluent in electronica but maintain an obvious pop sensibility. It remains to be seen whether they will break through to true stardom, but if they don’t, it won’t be for the lack of a great tune or a relentless work ethic.

The band will be touring the UK next year in support of their debut release, but let’s hope they make it over to these shores to wow the audiences in LA, and let’s celebrate a triumph of initiative from an ambitious duo.
