While taking an airboat ride through a swampy lake on a gator-spotting tour was an, uh, uniquely Floridian experience, my fondest recreational memory of living in that other Sunshine State is the night I went to see Cirque Du Soleil’s La Nouba at Downtown Disney. Though I had seen several of Cirque’s taped performances before attending the show, they didn’t compare to the experience of witnessing the dramatic performance art/acrobatic/music troupe live. I found myself grinning from ear to ear for several hours straight, and though I’ve yet to catch Iris (the show currently running here in Los Angeles), I might just have to take a little road trip for my next Cirque experience because the company has teamed up with MGM Resorts International & The Light Group to open a new nightclub in Las Vegas.
Set to open in March 2013, LIGHT is the first venture into the nightclub scene for Cirque du Soleil, and the 38,000-square-foot venue is slated to feature state-of-the-art production, theatrics, avant-garde costumes, unique choreography, and world-renowned DJs and performers. Exclusively built performance elements and visuals will be provided by revolutionary video mapping, lighting, sound, and special effects experts Moment Factory, and given Cirque’s ability to transform the traditional circus experience into something completely unique for audiences of all ages, I can’t even begin to imagine what boundaries they’ll be able to push for the nightclub circuit.
“The nightclub will serve as a laboratory, very much like our special events and projects have done in the past, for different and new artistic possibilities,” said Guy Laliberté, Founder, Cirque du Soleil, and according to the Light Group founder Andrew Sasson, “This partnership and the projects we are working on will be unlike anything the world has ever seen before – the ultimate theatrical nightlife venue. Cirque du Soleil has built a brand with worldwide recognition and their creativity, attention to detail and passion for their work perfectly complement The Light Group and everything we stand for.”
Sounds worthy of a short road trip to me!
