I’ll never forget when my husband first introduced be to fun., mostly because I tried to convince him he wasn’t introducing me to anything I didn’t already know. You see, the moment I heard Nate Ruess’ voice on the now-ubiquitous track “We Are Young,” I got excited about new music from The Format, an Arizona-based indie rock band fronted by Ruess that had provided the soundtrack to many a night during my college years. But this wasn’t The Format. This was fun.
Further investigation revealed that this new project of Ruess’ was stylistically unique to his previous work and that it also featured a guitarist by the name of Jack Antonoff, another familiar name as the Antonoff-fronted band Steel Train was responsible for one of my favorite albums of 2010. Add Andrew Dost of Anathallo to the mix and you have a supergroup of sorts, so it’s no surprise that with their powers combined (Captain Planet-style), fun. is finally garnering its three members the recognition they deserved but never quite achieved on their own.
If you’re a fan of fun., I highly suggest taking the time to listen to the artists’ previous efforts, and just because I can’t resist sharing anything fun.-related with you, also check out the trio’s performance of “Carry On” from this weekend’s Saturday Night Live taping below:
