The night before Halloween is typically known as “night of mischief” or “mischief night.” It usually amounts to a bunch of tweens and teens running around TP’ing your house and/or trees, and if you gave out dental floss or toothbrushes last year, some eggs smashed on your car would possibly be in order. This year’s “mischief night” coincides with the week’s new album releases, which, if you’re superstitious, could be an ominous sign of coming peril! Or if you’re like me, you probably just consider it to be a neat coincidence. Either way, this week has some pretty cool new albums coming out, so let’s go ahead and get started.

Andrew Bird – Hands of Glory

Hands of Glory is a companion piece to the critically acclaimed album Break It Yourself, which the artist released earlier this year. The album includes several covers of country tunes from Alpha Consumer, Handsome Family, and Townes Van Zandt, plus a new track called “Three White Horses” and a revised version of “Orpheo Looks Back” from Break It Yourself. Check out my full review of Hands of Glory for more thoughts on this release.

Hercules & Love Affair – DJ-Kicks

DJ-Kicks is a series put on by independent record label !K7 Records in which various artists make DJ mix albums. They have had artist like Terranova #9, Thievery Corporation #13, Nightmares on Wax #16, and Gold Panda #39 participate, and the 44th installment in the series will see NYC music project Hercules & Love Affair give their DJ mix a go.

Indian Handcrafts – Civil Disobedience For Losers

The second LP from the Canadian power duo Indian Handcrafts is also out this week. Civil Disobedience For Losers was recorded in Los Angeles in March 2012 with engineer Toshi Kasai (Melvins, Big Business, Red Sparowes, Marriages) and features guest appearances by Melvins drummers Dale Crover and Coady Willis.

Sean Price – Mic Tyson

Mic Tyson is the third solo studio album by Brooklyn-native MC Sean Price. When not lending his talents to the groups Boot Camp Clik or Random Axe, Price is hard at work on his solo career. The rapper is part of the elite up-and-coming underground hip-hop scene, which we all know can be lucrative and illustrious! All kidding aside, Price has a sense of style about his music that is purely unique to him — it’s hard without mentioning pistol whippings, and it’s smooth without a sultry feminine voice. If you’re into alt-hip hop, you will definitely want to check this one out.

Cody ChesnuTT – Landing On A Hundred

If you are not familiar with composer/musician Cody ChesnuTT, then you are missing out on one of the coolest neo-soul musicians making music right now. Atlanta-born and LA-bred, Cody ChesnuTT mixes elements of rock, folk, blues, reggae, soul, funk, and hip hop to create his own blend of new school soul music. Landing On A Hundred will be his second LP and is amongst the most anticipated releases of the week.

Other very notable releases coming out today:

Lulu Gainsbourg – From Gainsbourg To Lulu

Neil Young & Crazy Horse – Psychedelic Pill

Rod Stewart – Merry Christmas, Baby

Chad Valley – Young Hunger

Cee Lo Green – Cee Lo’s Magic Moment
