Amongst an invasion of music that is bright and colorful sits a band out of Canada called Metz. The noise-rock trio — comprised of Alex Edkins, Hayden Menzies, and Chris Slorach — has developed a sound reminiscent of early grunge but with the energy of hardcore punk. After making a name for themselves over the last three years by playing basements, skate shops, clubs, and festivals, Metz was recently signed to Sub Pop, which, you know, means they’re really friggin cool.

Their self-titled debut is set to drop on October 9th and is currently available for pre-order. It is reported that the band was “isolated in an old barn for a week with a portable recording rig” in order to capture the feeling of a Metz live performance, with Graham Walsh (Holy Fuck) and Alexandre Bonenfant adding “staggering sonic textures to the recording” and “waves of organic feedback and fuzzed-out drones” during recording.

Two tracks off the self-titled album have already been released, and the first, “Negative Space,” is a trashing, dissonant example of the power one would expect from the album while still getting a sample of the texture in the songwriting that makes this band unique.

The other is “Headache,” a track with a punk-driven tempo and a mentality that reminds me of groups like Nirvana or Pissed Jeans (also Sub Pop groups).

All in all, I think Metz provides something we need desperately in the music scene, which is more bands doing something different, so be on the lookout for their self-titled debut next week, and don’t forget to support alternative music. You can catch Metz at The Echo in LA on November 7, and tickets are still available.
