SoCal has been getting some serious love from the Deep South this week in the form of several performances by Alabama Shakes. The rock quartet treated fans to an intimate set at the 987 Penthouse yesterday evening before heading over to the Fonda Theatre for a sold-out show last night (be on the lookout for LAMB writer Jay Chirinos’ full recap of that event in the coming days). Tonight they’ll head slightly east to play the Fox Theater in Pomona, but you can get a little taste of an Alabama Shakes’ live show right now via their recent performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Alabama Shakes — fronted by Brittany Howard with guitarist Heath Fogg, bassist Zac Cockrell, and drummer Steve Johnson — played two tracks from their debut album, Boys and Girls, for the enthusiastic crowd at Jimmy Kimmel, and after watching the videos below, I’m kicking myself for not finding a way out to their show at the Fonda last night. Howard’s vocal performance is impecable, and she transitions from a sweet falsetto to a soulful growl with ease and style. I can’t pick a favorite between the two songs they chose to play, “I Ain’t the Same” and “Rise to the Sun,” so help me decide in the comments, and if you have a chance to catch the band in Pomona tonight, I suggest you do so.
